A DAY IN THE LIFE: BIKE MECHANICS TRAINER

Paul Longworth works as the Bike Mechanics Trainer in Frontline’s social enterprise, Frontline Bikes, at the Training & Upcycling Centre in Bluebell, Dublin 12.

Train as a Qualified Bike Mechanic at Frontline Bikes in Dublin

Are you looking to become a certified bike mechanic in Dublin? At Frontline Bikes, based in Bluebell, Dublin 12, we offer City & Guilds Accredited training in bicycle mechanics. Whether you're looking to build a new career or learn practical, hands-on skills, our bike mechanic training could be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.

Meet Paul Longworth – Lead Bike Mechanic Trainer in Dublin

Paul Longworth is the Bike Mechanics Trainer at Frontline Bikes’ Training & Upcycling Centre. With lived experience of addiction recovery, Paul brings empathy, skill, and structure to his role. His work is not just about fixing bikes – it’s about transforming lives through skills training and employment pathways.

Bicycle Mechanic Training with City & Guilds Accreditation

Our training programme is fully City & Guilds accredited, offering Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications in Bicycle Mechanics. Once both levels are completed, trainees will be fully qualified to work as professional bike mechanics in Ireland.

Paul facilitates this structured course in two daily sessions – morning and afternoon – ensuring small group instruction for individualised learning. He provides expert guidance through each module, assessing progress and preparing trainees for hands-on assessments.

Practical, Hands-On Learning at Our Dublin Bike Workshop

At our Bluebell training centre, trainees learn through practical instruction, visual demonstrations, and real-world tasks. From the start, each trainee receives an induction, familiarisation tour of the workshop, and their first assignment – stripping down bikes for parts. This task introduces them to the components of a bicycle and sets the foundation for further mechanical skills.

Modules cover a wide range of essential bike repair skills, including:

- Removing and replacing brake blocks

- Gear adjustments

- Wheel truing and building

- Full bike servicing

No two days are the same – trainees are always building new skills and gaining confidence.

Real-World Experience at Our Bike Shop in Inchicore, Dublin 8

Trainees also gain valuable customer service experience at our bike shop in Inchicore, Dublin 8. Here, they learn how to interact with real customers, manage repairs, and work as part of a functioning retail and repair team – all essential skills for future employment.

Supporting Personal Growth Through Bicycle Training

Our programme is designed to support individuals who have experienced:

- Substance misuse

- Long-term unemployment

- Life after prison

Paul understands the challenges faced by many of our trainees. Flexibility and support are key, with ongoing check-ins from Frontline’s key workers to help each person stay on track and succeed.

“For those who undertake and complete the course, it can provide self-satisfaction and enhance self-worth.” – Paul Longworth
