Spring Bike Tune-Up Checklist

Shorter days, wet weather, and cold conditions during the winter months can make cycling less appealing for some. If this is you, then your bike will likely need a bit of attention after months of sitting idle, to make sure it’s safe, smooth, and ready to ride.

Here’s our checklist for a spring bike tune-up:

  1. Check Your Tyres

Start with the basics:

- Inflate tyres to the recommended pressure (usually printed on the sidewall)
- Look for cracks, worn tread, or embedded debris
- Make sure both wheels spin freely without wobbling

Tip: Underinflated tyres make pedalling harder and increase the risk of punctures.

  1. Test Your Brakes

Your brakes are critical for safety:

- Squeeze both brake levers - do they feel firm?
- Inspect brake pads for wear
- Ensure pads hit the rim (or rotor) evenly

If you hear squealing or feel reduced stopping power, it’s time for an adjustment.

  1. Inspect the Chain & Drivetrain

A neglected chain can wear out your whole bike:

- Clean off dirt and old grease
- Apply fresh lubricant
- Check for rust or stiffness

While you’re at it, look over your gears and make sure shifting is smooth.

  1. Tighten Key Bolts

Give your bike a quick once-over:

- Handlebars
- Seat post
- Wheels (quick releases or axle nuts)

Everything should feel secure - but avoid overtightening.

  1. Lights & Reflectors

Longer days don’t mean you’ll never ride in low light:

- Check front and rear lights are working
- Replace batteries if needed
- Clean reflectors so they’re visible

  1. Give It a Clean

A clean bike isn’t just about looks:

- Wash off grime with warm soapy water
- Dry thoroughly to prevent rust
- Re-lubricate moving parts afterward

  1. Check Your Fit

Comfort matters:

- Adjust saddle height and angle
- Make sure handlebars feel natural
- Test ride and tweak as needed

A properly fitted bike helps prevent injuries and improves performance.

  1. When to Visit Frontline Bikes

If something doesn’t feel right - or you just want peace of mind - bring your bike in for a professional service. A full tune-up can catch issues you might miss and keep your bike running like new.
